We hear it every day. People losing their jobs in this difficult economy and discovering it was the best thing that ever happened to them. Who knows how long it will take, if ever, for the economy to rebound. Reason enough for you to be awesome now.
Here are some interesting formulas you can use to be on the winning side of the equation as you move forward in life and business.
The ability to “Connect” people. In emergency and difficult times, people run for cover and retreat into their own worlds for protection and survival. Many even take on a siege mentality in their work, their relationships, around money and in the community. This is the exact OPPOSITE of what you should do. Those who win are those who know how to pull teams together, maximize resources, tap un-used talent, create energy and motivate peak performance. Remember…the straggling lone gazelle is quickly taken by predators. (And there are certainly plenty of those in this environment.) Who do you surround yourself with? Are they actively seeking opportunities or are they watching the sky falling down? Or worse yet, are you trying to weather this on your own?
You have got to be a great “People Handler.” Knowing how to work with people, get past their “Little Voice”, deal with emotion, artfully discover their needs, keep them calm and focused are all vital in a volatile and difficult market. Facts alone can no longer win the day. You have to be able to sense where others are at, go into their world, build rapport, understand desires, and make them genuinely feel they can trust and depend on you. In short, your ability to sell dreams, ideas, products and true hope will improve the lives of others including your own.
Drive for something bigger than you that also supports you. At my company, the “Mission” is to improve the quality of life for everyone through transformation of the marketplace. When sometimes you feel like you cannot push on, remember that there are others who depend upon you and whose lives will be affected by your efforts. It can be a corporate mission or a personal mission. Either way there must be a motivation that offers a chance for you to become bigger than you are—that goes beyond money. By serving others, you can serve yourself.
Being in “Business for Yourself but Not by Yourself”. Understanding points 1-3, put yourself in a position to be at the “cause” of your income and lifestyle, not at the effect of someone or something else. With the right training, tools, team and system your earnings could be growing right now while others are either holding or in fear of the dreaded pink slips. Do it, but not alone! For example….The failure rate of sole proprietors is huge. The success rate of franchisees is amazing!
This brings up the most important skill for success in 2009. You have to be able to Manage “Mood Levels.” This all about “Little Voice” Mastery. (You know…the Little Voice between your ears!) In other words, with thoughts of or actual recession moving people’s minds into depression and deflation…..the person who can not only keep their own mood level high, but raise the mood level of others around them will make lots of money.
Be Awesome,

Blair
