Whether you’re starting a business or getting married, you need to have a goal. And that desire for your goal needs to be greater than your fear of what you have to do to achieve it.

The harsh realities of ascending a massive mountain mirror the harsh realities of building and scaling a business – along with the joy, fun, exhilaration, and rewards. This is something I learned on my many Kilimanjaro climbs. 

Here are 8 lessons that no one ever teaches you about building a business:

1. The power to recruit. 

Gather the best people to work together towards your company mission. The ability to inspire and motivate people is a critical skill in building your team. 

Think about it this way, when you recruit and develop a strong team, you are building a valuable asset for the future of your business.

2. The team cannot do the climb for you.

While that’s true, you can’t make it to the top of a mountain without a team. The team doesn’t absolve you from learning skills, being tough, and envisioning your future – but it does teach you how to be a productive part of something bigger. 

3. Take things one step at a time. 

You reach the top of the mountain by taking one step at a time. Building a business is the same. If you try to bite off more than you can chew, you’ll become unfocused. 

4. It’s not about the summit. 

If you’re going to be a great business owner, understand that the lessons and wins along the way accumulate with the purpose of delivering a special message. If you’re hyper-focused on reaching the top, what happens on the journey becomes irrelevant. 

5. Protocols are in place for a reason. 

Protocols are in place to protect the team, whether you’re climbing a mountain or building a business. It’s easy to get lazy about protocols, which causes people to get hurt. Don’t let that happen to you. 

6. There are two important aspects to a big project. 

The first part is the climb itself. The other part is the preparation, which takes much longer. You have to learn to love both parts. 

7. There’s a difference between your first and second time climbing. 

In the beginning, your sensory acuity is high, you may be worried, and you’re in a frenzy. After you successfully come back and go again, all of the unknowns are gone. Now, you can focus on getting the job done without anxiety. 

It’s the same in business. After you escape the startup phase, you can operate without stress. 

8. Know your loyalty chain. 

Who will you never double back on? What people will you always put first? As entrepreneurs, we tend to forget about family because we’re so caught up in reaching the summit. To avoid this, create a loyalty chain and never waver from it. If you don’t have a loyalty chain, you may reach your goal, but the collateral damage will be severe. 

Kilimanjaro has an established path to the top. Unlike Kilimanjaro there are many paths to reach your business goals. No one will tell you these 8 tips on the way to the top, so it’s important that I share them with you today.

How often do you beat yourself up because you can’t get everything done? Or because you keep forgetting something you really need to do? 

The good news is, you’re not not alone. 84% of Americans feel stressed weekly, with the most stress on Monday mornings. Constant overwhelm does not help you as an entrepreneur. 

Do you want to take your business from solo to a fully scalable business? In that case, you have to learn how to get shit done, which does not include constant overwhelm and undone tasks.

Internal and external factors are in play when struggling with getting things done. First, internally, you hyperfocus on daily minutia because you don’t value yourself or your dreams enough on some level. 

Second, externally, your strengths become your weaknesses. As an entrepreneur, I expect you to excel (or did!) at getting things done on some level! People can spot a go-getter and tend to hand off tasks they don’t want. As you take on more responsibilities, you feel overwhelmed and find you can no longer get things done.

You need a complete reset to overcome your inability to accomplish essential tasks. Reprioritizing and releasing tasks that don’t belong to you is a necessary step in the process. The next step is to make it a habit to complete the tasks that take you closer to your dreams and goals.

Addicted to Busy

Busy people are often confused with productive people. This is not always true. Being productive means that you can complete tasks. How you spend your time determines if you are busy. Procrastinators can be busy without accomplishing much.

Did you know being busy is addictive? Are you feeling less creative, frustrated with your schedule, or far less productive than ever? Do you have a full schedule but never have time for the tasks on your list that will move you forward in your life or business? You may be addicted to being busy. 

You either have too much on your plate or are not making yourself a priority. You must commit to changing your daily routine to break the busy habit. Creating a habit takes about 30 days. Finding an accountability person to help you stay consistent is vital when making habitual changes.

Time is a Limited Resource

Everyone has 24 hours a day, and every waking hour can not be a working hour. For example, out of the 24 hours, 8 hours make up a typical work day. Taking this even further, everyone has about 5 total productive hours out of an 8-hour workday. It is crucial to be mindful when choosing your tasks.

This is where I suggest using “sacred time.” This time is not for journaling or meditating. Sacred time, in this case, is for tasks related to reaching your goals. You may be wondering, how will I find time each week to work on my personal business goals or projects? The answer is to delete and delegate!

Delete from your plate any tasks that do not belong to you or should not belong to you. Then when you have pared down your list, delegate! As an entrepreneur, you need a team. Even a small team will help you free up valuable time to work on your business goals.

Teamwork makes the dreamwork! If you are going to reach the apex of building a fully scalable business, you have to cultivate a dream team by learning to believe in other people.

While you might be used to working and making all of your business decisions on your own as an entrepreneur, this mindset is not sustainable for growing your business.

You have to be able to believe in other people and allow them to play a part in scaling your business.

This doesn’t mean that you have to worship the ground they walk on, give them all of your responsibilities, or expect them to have all the solutions to your problems. It just means that you have faith that they’ll step up to the plate and do the tasks their role requires.

There are two key elements you need to make this happen:

1. Trust

A great team requires trust. 

You shouldn’t feel like you have to look over anyone’s shoulders or micromanage their work to make progress. You shouldn’t have to wonder whether they are on the same page and getting their work done.

You should trust that everyone on your team is doing exactly what they need to do when they need to be doing it.

This trust is developed through closeness of contact.

There’s a reason why the saying, “keep your friends close and your enemies closer” is popular. It’s hard for someone to step out of line when someone is close enough to hold them accountable.

Frequent and regular check-ins with your team will build mutual trust. You will be able to trust that they will share their progress and important information with you when you check in with them. They will be able to trust that you care about the team and are available to answer questions or address concerns that arise during check-ins.

Staying in contact will help build trust and ensure you and your team members are on the same page.

If you never check in with your team members, it will make them feel like you are an absent leader who only gets involved when someone makes a mistake. If you don’t trust your team members, they won’t feel like they are a part of your business, and they will not be invested in helping your business grow.

While you always run the risk of believing in people that could possibly let you down, the rewards far outweigh the risks.

When you actively believe in your team members:

• You give people the power and freedom to take risks that can help scale 

            your business

• You help develop great leaders who will step up and take on more

            responsibility

• You build a team that is invested in your business and its success

As you scale your business, make sure you are showing your team members that you trust them and value their contributions to your business.

2. Believing in yourself

When you believe in yourself and the direction you are taking your business, it will help you become a better leader. This will allow you to build teams of people who you can trust to help you reach your goals.

To create a dream team, you need to be able to set clear expectations, create achievable goals for your team, and maintain frequent communication with your team.

All of these steps are impossible if you don’t believe in yourself first.

To set clear expectations, you need to believe in your mission, vision, and values and share these with your team. 

To create achievable goals, you have to have a good relationship with failure and know how to push your team without putting them in impossible situations. 

To maintain frequent communication, you have to believe you have something to say, and you have to be confident enough to solicit and accept feedback and constructive criticism.

If you aren’t able to set expectations, create achievable goals, and communicate with your team, you will have trouble believing in them because they won’t rise to your standards. As you can see, believing in yourself is key for believing in others. 

Believe in your own judgment when choosing and developing your teams and trust them to reach the goals you’ve set for them, and they will rise to your expectations and give you a reason to believe in them.

Belief in others starts and ends with you. If you’re having trouble building a dream team, don’t be afraid to take a look at yourself and your leadership style and make any necessary changes.

If you believe in yourself, you can do more for your team and for your business. 

As an entrepreneur, you need to communicate well to your team, especially to your leads, prospects, and partners.

On your ascent to achieving a fully scalable business, there’s one thing nobody will ever tell you: People don’t care what’s on your business card, or what your title is.

Do you think you can be rich, and yet you’re not quite there? The following 7 skills will help you get there faster. 

1. Sell.

Sales = income. 

If you can’t sell, you can’t generate income for your business – no matter how good your product is. You won’t be able to recruit or raise capital. If you know how to sell, you can do those things (or learn how to do them very quickly). 

2. Be the eye of the storm. 

You must be calm and patient. 

If you are, you will do well. Others may be freaking out, and you won’t be. This allows you to see opportunities they won’t. 

3. Pull a group of people together. 

No great endeavor is a solo deal.

Whatever it is you’re doing, you will need a team. A good team leader must be likable, have a vision, and draw people in. 

4. Face the facts and pull the trigger.

You need to be able to look at something head-on and assess it accurately, then make a decision immediately. 

5. Have a student mindset.

Be willing to learn. 

Never say, “I already know that.” Eliminate that phrase from your vocabulary and allow yourself to see things differently. Learning is one of the most essential skills in becoming rich.

6. Shut up. 

The most powerful and influential people say the least and listen the most. Make sure that you’re listening, calibrating, and taking notes. 

7. Be aware of your surroundings. 

Learn to assess the environment to see what’s going on before you act. This way, you communicate with empathy rather than going in and being disruptive. If you do this, you’ll see opportunities that you wouldn’t have seen otherwise. 

Bonuses: 

On top of the 7 tips, here are two important bonuses that can’t go unmentioned: 

1. Take a risk. 

Take that risk, and also be willing to correct quickly. You’re going to make a lot of mistakes… That’s a good thing. When things don’t work out for you, be sure to cut your losses early. On the other hand, when the wind is at your back, let your winners run.
